Dear Kari

A Song About Autism/Avoidance

Dear Kari,

I've listened to this song "Flight Risk" by Jenevieve 100 times in a row, and I finally understood to be sung from the perspective of an autistic/avoidant person.

The chorus lyrics are:

don't mess with my ice game, unless you want trouble

To me, "ice game" means what others perceive to be cold treatment, but is actually the person's need for space and isolation.

if you throw a fit, *****, yeah I got a muzzle

If others become punitive about the needs of the autistic or avoidant person, this person will push them away or block them to make them shut up.

might dip, I'm a flight risk

this person is at risk of disappearing in order to fulfill their needs.

My studies suggest that these serendipitous things keep happening to me because my brain has developed a new "emotional map" as an avoidant.

I will never forget this day.
